For any digital communications link, the ultimate measure of its physical layer performance is whether the bits sent are received correctly while transmitting data. At times, errors can happen within the system, especially if the medium over which the data is being transmitted is noisy, which can lead to a compromise in the integrity of transmission. Bit error ratio measures this performance. BERT is essential for receiver characterization and compliance testing in industries.
BERT testers, such as the Tektronix BSA286CL BERTScope, are a common feature in many test labs, either as bit error ratio measuring devices or as test pattern sources for other measurements like data rates.
Any data stream sent by the BERT through the communication channel, both radio link and fiber optic, is compared with the original. Data errors are logged and the number of errors is determined.
Unlike other forms of testing devices, bit error rate measurement devices measure the full end-to-end performance of the system, including the transmitter, receiver, and any region between the two. In this way, BERT testers analyze the performance as if the system were in actual operation, rather than testing the parts separately.
A high-speed bit error tester is typically used in the design and manufacturing of high-speed components and early design phases of boards and systems. Bit error rate (BER) test sets typically comprise pattern generators, bit error detectors, clock signal generators, digital communication analyzers, and electrical-optical and optical-electrical converters.
Traditionally, BERTs have been associated with radio communication links. However, they are also applicable to fiber optics and Ethernet links. Bit error testing is used to test many digital interfaces, such as QPI, FB-DIMM, PCI Express®, SATA/SAS USB, Thunderbolt, Display Port, HDMI, MHL, MIPI, UHS-II, Fiber Channel, XAUI/10GB Ethernet, CAUI/100 GbE, CEI, OTN, PON-OLTs, etc.
